Safe and Respectful Workplaces: Train the Trainer (2 days)

We know that sexual harassment and other forms of gendered violence are endemic in our workplaces. The recent national survey on sexual harassment in Australian workplaces found that 39% of women, 26% of men and 52% of those who identify as LGBTIQ have been sexually harassed at work in the past 5 years. Sexual harassment and gendered violence is a workplace health and safety issue, and like any other WHS issue, the risk of gendered violence can be managed, mitigated, and eventually eliminated.

In 2016 the Victorian Union Movement launched the Stop Gendered Violence at Work campaign which aims to stop sexual harassment and other forms of gendered violence at work.

A key part of this campaign is the development and roll out of the VTHC Safe and Respectful Workplaces training which aim to equip unions and workers to better prevent and respond to gendered violence. The training was developed and piloted in 2017 and has since been evaluated by RMIT Design & Creative Practice Enabling Capability Platform. The training focuses on sexual harassment and other forms of gendered violence as a WHS issue and explores how to organise to stop gendered violence using practical tools and frameworks.

In this two day workshop we will share our curriculum, resources and experience delivering the training so that other unions are able to adapt and deliver the Safe and Respectful Workplaces training or create their own gendered violence training curriculum.

Learning Outcomes:

• gaining a deep understanding of gendered violence

• engaging with the VTHC Safe and Respectful Workplaces training curriculum and building confidence to adapt and deliver

• using transformative learning techniques and activities to build empathy and understanding

• workers as experts – decentreing yourself as a trainer to get by-in

• how to challenge attitudes, assumptions and perceptions while bringing participants with you

• how to deal with 'pushback'

• strategies for creating a safe and inclusive learning environment when dealing with gendered violence and disclosure

• training as organising: using shared values and WHS to make workplaces safe, respectful and free of gendered violence

This training is open to union officials and members. Once you have registered for the training your union will be invoiced. Training costs are as follows:

VTHC affiliated union: cost is included in affiliation fees (no charge)

Other state and national unions: $110 per person
